The trout fly “Mallard and Claret” is probably one of the best known of Traditional Irish wet Flies.
It is a very old pattern and although it represents nothing in particular it will take trout right through the season.
It is very successful during the early season duckfly hatches, fished in the smaller sizes of #12 and #14 and later in the season fish the larger # 10 when sedges are about. It is a great point fly for salmon and seatrout in both river and lake fished in #10 and #8.
This pattern is tied with jungle cock cheeks and with a body colour of Traditional Irish dubbing No. 14 Medium Claret . A “must have” pattern for the serious Lough fisherman.(See my large lake wet fly ranges)
